What Answer Are You Waiting For?

I have often had the honor of spending meditative time in the midst of a hawk. I am so aware of the many teachings Spirit extends to us through them. Thus, I was grateful to have been joined by one today as I began to sit. I wished to spend some quiet time regarding a particular current situation that, on occasion, entices me to shift my awareness from Love to fear.

At one point, as I opened my eyes briefly, I saw this red-tailed hawk fly up from the ground to a nearby limb in front of me. I had seen it eating as I first sat down. "How long had you waited to catch this meal?", I questioned silently. An answer came unexpectedly..."No time at all. I do not keep time."

With that I found hawk taking me on a journey of perspectives.

When the hawk finds a perch for hunting, it is in that moment requesting a meal; if you will, sending a prayer for supply of food. And then it sits...for possibly very long periods of time. I can only attest to having stayed for 2 hours watching one hawk sit, so it outlasted me; I know not by how much.

We too, make requests of God; send prayers up; become inspired to manifest a thing into our life experience. And then what? How long can we "sit" with it? Perhaps more importantly, in what manner are we able to "sit" with it? Have we found the Stillness within that remains peaceful along our journey? Can our awareness remain there? Can we walk within the fulfillment of our request/vision?

To be clear, "sitting" can mean many things. It will mean what it does for you, and perhaps something very different for another. One person may be certain their next move is revealed to them, and can act immediately. Another person may have no idea in any given moment what is next for them to do, but senses they can move forward and the path will be shown as needed. Yet another may have full understanding that they are to be still, "doing" nothing, allowing for what is and for what will come. They will know when a move is to be made.

Like us, all hawks certainly do not have the exact same experiential journey as they "hunt". Unlike most of us however, hawks do not have an expectation of exactly how the process is going to look. Nor do they concern themselves with how their experience compares to the hawk in the next field. How can I know this, you ask? Have you ever seen a hawk frantically pacing back and forth on a tree branch, sqwaking complaints about how long they've been waiting for a mouse to come along?
Picture
"Oh COME ON! It's gonna rain soon, and I've been here for hours! You can't muster up one snack for me by now?? I'll bet that greedy goshawk got it's breakfast already. It always gets what it wants."
                                                                        ***

How long is it before we start to get antsy or impatient about a response to our prayers; for some tangible evidence of progress towards our vision? Do we even dare to expect a response to our prayers? Are we able to keep our awareness on Love in the midst of an apparent obstacle, or do we lose our perspective, focus on fearful thoughts that arise, and become spiritually paralyzed?

I cannot imagine a hawk having to battle with an inner conversation of Love vs. fear after it has swooped down and missed its first opportunity for food that day.
Picture
"Oh my gosh. I missed that snake. It was right there and I missed it. I am the worst hunter ever! Uh oh. What if there aren't any more left? I'm never going to get to eat again. Maybe I should go vegan. Maybe I was supposed to miss that snake so I'd try eating berries instead. I have never wanted to eat berries, but other critters eat them, so maybe I should. I don't know WHAT to DO! Okay, okay,  calm down. If God had wanted you to eat berries, you would want to eat berries. Just refocus. Something is bound to come along again. Geez, I'm exhausted."
                                                                    ****

I hope, besides having a knowing a chuckle, you are getting a sense of the lessons Nature has to offer us. We are part of a Creation that KNOWS what to do. We are part of a Creation that is aware, at peace, trusting, stable...at least certainly stable compared to our current experience. We did not somehow end up the only part of Creation that was not endowed with these qualities.

Most importantly for us humans, we are part of a Creation that is LOVE...that is only Love, actually. We may need to sift through eons of our human-constructed overlays to get to our true understanding of the Love Which created all that is, but all of Creation embodies this. Some would say that is the purpose for us perceiving "time". We need time for all that sifting. We need time to wake up. Because of course, we must embody this Love as well, regardless of what it looks like.

Here lies the key difference. Unlike the rest of Creation, we see ourselves separate from all else; from God, from each other, and from the rest of Creation. That concept would give any red-blooded hawk a chill down to its hollow bones.

Perceiving ourselves as separated from God is easily our greatest misunderstanding. It would also be the clear explanation of why we live with such uncertainty, anger, and fear. We do not perceive the perfection that we are in our true essence, and that has left us in a perpetual state of alienation from everything around us. How can we experience our oneness with the rest of Creation when we've lost the experience of our own true identity?

It is no wonder that hawks do not flail about in uncertainty and fear. They have not stopped hearing the voice of God. They still experience themselves as part of a whole. They do not perceive themselves as having a beginning and an end. What would they be concerned about?

We are part of that same whole; one act of Creation; one perfect tapestry. So then it follows that we too must "know", have perfect peace, are aware, trusting, and have no beginning and no end. We too are Love. We ARE all of it.

We, however, are the only ones who began to see ourselves as separated from that. This is all we need "fix". We can choose to see as we have been taught to see, which has left us with a crippling spiritual astigmatism, or we can choose to learn what it means to see as we were meant to see, through the eyes we were given in the moment of our creation. We have never lost this sight, only abandoned it. We can get a sense of what that would look like by observing Nature. We can experience it ourselves by accessing our Inner Teacher; our true Nature.

God patiently waits, and lovingly requests that you choose again. Choose to see the Light that is in you.  This is the you that was created, along with the rest of Creation...all done so, perfectly. Perfect Love extending itself here on Earth...as everything. We cannot BE anything other than how we were created, but we can perceive ourselves as something other than how we were created, and so follows our experience.

We're already witnessing the fear that comes with perceiving ourselves as separate from all else. Choose again. Use some time to spend it quietly within to explore the Stillness there. This is who you really are, and you will see your life experience differently when witnessing from this perspective.

So, what answer are you waiting for? What prayer have you sent out that appears to have yet to be answered? What vision are you holding that seems to be taking forever to be manifest into the physical? What question do you have that you cannot seem to get a solid answer to?

Look within. Do the work to find That which is in you that knows. You are meant to know. And if you allow Spirit to teach you through the rest of Creation, watch for the hawk. Let it remind you of its perspective. It is a master.

Choose Again

In my new book, STAY: Suicide Can Wait, I encourage those who are struggling with their current experience to look within. Why? What do I think there is to be found there?

An entirely new way of experiencing life.

We have spent, perhaps our entire existence, experiencing our lives from "without". Not only without our real eyes, without our real ears, but without any of the senses we were given to know. And also "without", in that each of us is projecting our perceptions outside of ourselves. As we exert our individual personalities upon one another, we are operating at a very superficial level. I would argue, not only superficial, but even less real than that. In the book I explain why I refer to our bodies as "avatars".

My purpose for pointing people to look inward is to find the being we truly are, beyond our body; our deeper, authentic self. And then, to allow this authentic self to take its rightful place in revealing the experience of our life.

It likely hasn't occurred to us that we actually have a choice in how we perceive our life experience. Our knee-jerk perceptions present themselves with such immediacy that we presume them to be the right and proper perceptions we are to have. But if we were to take the time to examine our most common reactions to life, we would find them based in fear, and in defense of fear. Fear is the teacher we trust most in this world. We trust it most because we invented it, but it is not our intended way of being here.

There is one other teacher, and it dwells within. Love. This is who we truly are because it is who we were created to be. As over-used and twisted as the word "love" has become to us, I must use it, and trust that Love will reveal Itself to you beyond our puny experiences of it. That is why we need to look within - to discover what Love is in its purest form, and thus realize who we are in our authentic, pure form; spirit.

There is one simple premise here...we cannot possibly be something other than what we were created to be. How could that work?! Consider for a moment, if this were not true, we would be greater than That Which created us. We would have superceded the perfect desire and will of the One Who created all. That is simply an impossibility.

What we can do, is choose to perceive ourselves other than who we truly are. It is our free will to do so. We are free to see ourselves and our life situations incorrectly. We are also free to choose again, and to see ourselves as we were created.

We can look within, and find our true identity. It is real, and proves Itself as we allow for our experience of It. We see with new eyes, hear with new ears, and realize expansive senses. We witness Love in an uncommon way. All of this inspires us to relinquish our current way of perceiving life, and choose again.

Our Creator has never experienced our separation. Only we have, incorrectly. The pure Love from which we came only and always simply says, "Choose again. Choose Love."

Take a look at the situations that arise in your day, and begin to ask yourself, "What would Love's response be to this?" Then, go within, and find out.

Let Your Heart Be at Peace

Let your heart be at peace. We may come across this phrase countless times in our spiritual pursuits; from ancient scriptures and texts, to modern books and teachings. It beckons us to experience the very peace we are seeking. Simply reading or hearing the words can, in fact, inspire peacefulness to rise within us.

Consider for a moment what that phrase says to you. Just how do you "let your heart be at peace"? If it were easy, we wouldn't find ourselves without peace so much of the time, right?

Do you think there is something you can eventually do that would enable you to let your heart be at peace? Does it seem like you should find peace and bring it to the heart? Should someone else be able to do something so you could let your heart be at peace?

Or could it be as pure as this...let yourself experience your heart as it always is; at peace. Allow your awareness to view your heart in its continuous condition of peacefulness.

Hold your awareness here. You are joining the peace that is in you at all times. Choose not to follow any thought that would draw you away from this awareness. For it is only the layers of distracting thoughts we entertain that cloak our awareness of the peace that is within us. And even that cloaking is nothing more than the shadows of those thoughts. They have no real power to interrupt our experience with the perpetual peacefulness of the heart center. A shadow only needs to be brought to the light of truth for its disintegration.

Lean not on the understanding that brought you to the place of anxiety, fear, anger, or other dis-ease. That "understanding" is no more than shadows cast by thoughts that did not come from the ever peaceful heart of you. Those thoughts that disturb come from misconceptions of your half-sighted mind. Half-sighted, in that it does not see the truth for what it is, but through the lens of its own projected fear-filled illusions.

The time to ask for solutions to your dis-ease is not when you believe yourself deafened by the voices of the chaotic half-sighted mind. To believe you are deafened is to experience deafness, even though it be completely untrue.

Instead, bring your awareness to your heart. It is only peaceful there. It is not possible for it to be anything else. And once you begin to experience the peace that is there, bask in it a while. But let yourself do something else before getting up from this peaceful state, and continuing on with your day. Once you have joined with the peace of your heart, stay long enough to ask for your solutions here; for here is where you will hear the Voice of God clearly.

It is clear in this place always, and we can meet it always. We are never required to experience ourselves any other way.
Picture
We were created to witness the perspective of our Creator. When we ask to experience that perspective, we will never be denied, for we are only asking for that which is already within us. But, we can do ourselves the loving favor of asking for our help while joined with the peace-filled heart center. This is where we can better hear the sure, and clear Voice of Spirit.

Accustom yourself to this realm of peacefulness, and it need not feel so new and ephemeral. Dwell within this realm and experience what you have always been...at peace, and fully connected with That Which created you.

You are under no enchantment, other than your own. Do not give shadows of thoughts power they do not possess. Nothing stands in the way...your heart is at peace. Join it.

* As best as I can give credit for the phrase, "You are under no enchantment other than your own": to a wise wizard in what I believe was one of the Lord of the Rings movies. (You need not comment on this. I feel no urgency to know the correct details)

A Meditation Practice for Beginners

9/19/2016

Picture
One of the most challenging aspects of meditating is dealing with our thoughts.
For this meditative practice, our goal is not to eliminate our thoughts. Heck, if we were capable of doing that we wouldn't NEED to meditate. Instead, we're going to practice allowing for our thoughts. The "work" will be to keep our awareness on the thoughts that arise without getting carried away by them...and by that I mean, not giving any energy to them.

So, when a thought arises that might ordinarily cause us to feel anger, anxiety, sadness, etc., the practice will be not to engage in that thought. We won't argue with it, or feed it with new ideas. We won't try to chase it away or shut it up. The practice for this meditation will be to simply allow the thought to be there until it isn't anymore. And to do the same thing with the next thought that arises, and the next.

HOW TO TREAT OUR THOUGHTS WHILE MEDITATING
It can be very much like the television or radio being on in the background, for the white noise it creates for us. We know it's on, but we aren't giving it any of our real attention. We don't give any mind to it because we're really doing something else. Even when we catch the sound of that commercial we just hate, we'll either grab the remote to change the station, or do our best to ignore it until its over.

For those who might actually start a whole mind story about how bad the commercial is, what you think of it, and what you think of the people who made it...try another analogy on for size.

Let's say you are watching cars go by on the street in front of you. You may notice what color each car is, but you give absolutely no mind energy into changing the colors of the cars. You don't care what color each car is, and even if you did you have absolutely no power to change them...so you don't try. Please tell me you don't try. lol
You just let the cars go by, right? You like that color? You enjoy it. Don't like that color? You just let it go by. Let that be how you treat your thoughts as they go by the street of your mind while you are in meditation.

And just like those commercials or those ugly cars, the thoughts that threaten to distract us during meditation will pass. When we don't give our energy to them, they just drift off to wherever they came from.

So remember, you do not have to chew on every thought that arises. You will have plenty of opportunities to gnaw on them later. Just not during your chosen meditation time. They are relegated to "white noise" and ugly cars as long as you are sitting in this practice.

WHAT DO YOU DO INSTEAD OF PAYING ATTENTION TO THOSE THOUGHTS?
One way I've found to be very effective is to bring your awareness to your breath as you allow for the thought that has come up.

Here's an example:
You are sitting comfortably. Your eyes are closed, and you are breathing quietly. It won't be long before some thought shows up.
"My shoulders kind of hurt".
"The dog is whining at the door".
"Why did I say that when I was talking with my boss yesterday?"

Bring your awareness immediately to your breath. Pay attention to how the air feels coming in through your nose..the coolness. And what it feels like filling your lungs; then, the warmth of the air as it goes out again through your nose.

You begin this practice the moment a thought has come up in your mind. You choose not to respond to the thought with another thought first. You just take your awareness to your breath. I don't care if you only get one good breath in before you go let the dog out, just take that one breath. Next time, take two.

An important part of this practice is not to argue with the thought. Not to replace one thought with another...but if you do...as soon as you realize you have, take your awareness to your breath.

As soon as you find yourself grumbling that you got carried away by that last thought, take your awareness to your breath. Breathe the way described above until the next thought makes its way through.

If you realize you've been chewing on a thought for what sees like 5 minutes, allow that to be what it is, and without judgment if you can, take your awareness to your breath. Breathe consciously this way way until the next thought arises.

No matter what the thought, whether it is an initial thought, the thought you fed that one, or the judgmental thought about getting carried away by a thought...whenever you awaken from that place, promise to drive your awareness to your breath for at least one good, fully focused breath. And the next time, two.

And there is your practice. Remember, you'll have the entire rest of the day to get carried away by and with your thoughts; and to judge them. So, just give yourself this 2-5 minute time off from that insanity. And then 10 minutes. Soon 20 minutes will feel like a beautifully blissful 5.

So here you go. Ask yourself before you begin...what would it look like if I simply watched my thoughts, and didn't get carried away by them during my meditation? And then, try answering it. How would that look? Then sit comfortably, close your eyes, breathe softly, and begin.

While I was in the middle of doing some mundane computer work, I realized I had just been imagining a "bad-case scenario". One of those that, if they were to really happen...well, makes your stomach turn just thinking about it.

Then the question came - Why was I spending time weaving that story up? If I was going to spend some energy on a future happening, then why would I choose a distasteful scenario, instead of an extraordinary scenario? Good question!

I set about imagining the most amazing scenario around that same idea, and let all the wonderful, excited, peaceful, and joyous feelings that came with THAT scenario sweep over me. Finishing with a big, happy sigh.

What a beautiful lesson for me. When I was thinking unconsciously, I automatically came up with something difficult and fear-filled. When I thought consciously, I wove a perfectly wonderful scenario.                                                                                                                             Note to self:

A New Path to My Journey

11/26/2015

Sometime around 2007 or 2008 I was invited to take part in a Reiki training class. I had no idea what Reiki was, and had no particular interest in exploring energy work, or any spiritual experiences.

I attended this class because I was interested in developing new friendships, and I liked the woman who invited me. I thought I had simply said yes to attending a class. I now understand I had said "Yes" to LIFE. I showed up, and the Universe came to play with me.

More Reiki classes followed, along with a seminar about Eckhart Tolle's books, a perfectly timed audio version of Deepak Chopra's "The Path to Love", and a surprise sighting of what would become my first and best yogic experience to date (Unified Body Wellness Institute in Grafton, WI). Then a year long Sacred Journey workshop with my much loved Reiki teacher, Rebecca Moravec. All of this punctuated and enhanced along the way with precious spiritual experiences leading me to understandings that were inconceivable to me prior to that first Reiki class.

I remember the day Rebecca, my teacher, said to me, "Cathy, it's time for you to wake up". I recall thinking to myself, "What the heck am I supposed to do with that?" Well, my soul knew exactly what to do with it. Before I fully realized I was in fact beginning to wake up, I asked her at one point why she had said that to me. Her response spoke deep into my heart, "Because you are needed."

More important personal work...meditation, breath work, Young Living Essential Oils (TRANSFORMATION BLEND...what a blessing), and an amazing paradigm-shifting Prosperity Plus seminar created by Mary Morrisey, and the next thing I know I am writing this book, FEMININE RISING - Experience Your Life in a New Way.

This book is my offering to the stream of voices encouraging people to look within. There is something incredible and authentic there. You too can EXPERIENCE YOUR LIFE IN A NEW WAY.
